Boy, 9, reunites with Coast Guard rescuers
Nine-year-old Tommy Alter of Highland Park showed off his toy helicopter on Tuesday to the Coast Guard crew that saved him from a kayaking mishap earlier this month. "Thank you so much," his mom, Leslie Alter, told the crew, who landed for a reunion at a Wheeling airport.

Wheeling teen gets 180 days in jail for fatal accident
A Wheeling teenager pleaded guilty to misdemeanor reckless related to an accident that claimed the life of an 86-year-old pedestrian last December. Melissa Salgado, 19, was sentenced to two years probation and 180 days in Cook County Jail in exchange for her guilty plea.

Buffalo Grove shifting minor offenses out of court system
Buffalo Grove hopes to hold its first administrative adjudication hearings for parking, nonmoving traffic and ordinance violations, as well as building and zoning violations, in January, Police Chief Steven Casstevens said this week. But a lot of groundwork still needs to be performed before the rollout. The process would divert cases involving minor offenses from the court system, and put them into the hands of a hearing officer at village hall.

Long Grove mayor says village might seek funding to repair covered bridge
Long Grove's need to repair or replace a venerable covered bridge was among the topics that emerged Thursday at the Lake Zurich Area Chamber of Commerce's annual Breakfast With the Villages. Fire engulfed the side of a home July 27 on the 900 block of Stuart Drive in Bartlett. The owner left ashes to cool from a bonfire the night before. He poured water on them in the morning and threw them into a garbage can. Items in the garbage can ignited and the fire quickly spread.

A three-vehicle crash in Buffalo Grove seriously injured a man driving a pickup truck Thursday afternoon, fire officials said.The man was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville with injuries that are believed to be life-threatening.

Secretary of state's mobile driver unit visits Buffalo Grove Aug. 8
Illinois Secretary of State Jesse White's Mobile Driver Services unit will be in Buffalo Grove next week providing a Rules of the road review class, driver's license renewals and other services. The unit will be at Buffalo Grove Park District's Alcott Center, 530 Bernard Drive, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday, Aug. 8.

Trial delayed for 2 of 3 men accused in Wauconda home invasion
The trial date for two of three men accused of invading a Wauconda apartment and shooting a 26-year-old man was delayed in Lake County court Monday. Attorneys for Jose Alfredo Dominguez-Eleperez, 27, of Wheeling, and John Nava, 19, of Niles, requested more time, claiming more investigation needed to be done on the case. Prosecutors said the trial for the third man, Noe J. Brito-Ramirez, 22, of Crystal Lake, will most likely be delayed Tuesday.

A former artistic director of the Marriott Lincolnshire Theatre will be honored during a public memorial next week. Dyanne Kathleen Earley, 76, of Mundelein, died July 24, at her home after a short illness. Her family was with her.

The first time Adam Rubin went sky diving, he was hooked. That love grew to include other extreme sports, such as base jumping. Rubin, 23, of Long Grove, died Friday after his parachute failed to open properly during a base jump in Idaho.

Wheeling OKs Town Center deal; Argiris wants plans
It should have been a joyful occasion. After years of uncertainty and delays, the Wheeling village board Monday approved a contract with Urban R2 for a $100 million redevelopment called Town Center. Yet Mayor Dean Argiris was impatient for some of the groundbreaking. "I don't want to wait two years; I don't want to wait one year," Argiris said.

Buffalo Grove could become the first community in Lake County to host a medical marijuana dispensary, if the state grants a license to Midwest Releaf, based in Gurnee, which wants to open the dispensary in an industrial area of Buffalo Grove near Milwaukee and Aptakisic.
